What is Kiwanis Club of Singapore?
Kiwanis Club of Singapore (Delta Chapter) was formed sometime in the second half of 2003 when a group of professionals and businessmen with the common desire to serve and make the world a better place for all, especially the children of the world, came together to explore how they can collectively achieve their altruistic goals in a fun and collaborative environment. Over several dinner meetings, the group decided to form the Kiwanis Club of Singapore (Delta Chapter) as an autonomous affiliate of Kiwanis International which is a worldwide service organization founded in the US in 1915.
The club chose to be part of the Kiwanis family because of the following reasons:
- Kiwanis focuses on serving the children of the world.
- Kiwanis is a vibrant and rapidly growing brand in the Asia Pacific region.
- Kiwanis emphasises on hands-on involvement and close association with all the community projects it chose to undertake.
- Kiwanis has a tradition of engaging the spouse and children of its members to be an active part of its social programs and community service projects.
The club exists primarily to help create and provide young children and youth with opportunities that are not available to them because of their disadvantaged background to become socially active and useful citizens and leaders, armed with altruistic values, when they grow up.
The plan is to achieve this through:
- Kiwanis Key Clubs established in secondary & junior colleges in Singapore
- Key Leader Program
- Community Service
The Impact Created
The club members are all volunteers and come from all walks of life. All of them came forward for the singular purpose of giving their time, expertise and leadership skills as well as opening their networks to support the highly disadvantaged and vulnerable children in our midst.
It is very important that the club members are able to communicate better, understand each other and make better decisions as a team to bring the club forward; the club works on many projects for the various schools and the community.
Kiwanis was seeking for a solution to develop trust and to facilitate communication amongst the volunteer members. This is very critical as it helps to bring the club to the next level, expand their pool of volunteers and their outreach initiatives.
Emergenetics’ signature program, the Meeting of the Minds workshop had given the club members a great insight into their thinking and behavioural preferences. As the club members are from diverse backgrounds, they wanted to build on a strong collaborative and productive culture in their organisation. Hence, learning about self-awareness from the Meeting of the Minds workshop session was a great step forward.
During the 4 hour workshop session, the participants had great fun and felt that they connected better as a team after the workshop. The workshop had given them a more complete and unique picture of individuals and helped them relate to instances where the committee had difficulties coming to a decision. They believe that the future application of Emergenetics will definitely help towards better decision making for the club.
What did they say? Quotes from the Participants…
“Being one of the participants in the Emergenetics seminar organised for Kiwanis Club of Singapore, I greatly enjoyed the session conducted by the facilitator, Mr. Jerome Song. The session provided me the opportunity to understand the thinking preferences and the behavioural attributes of our team members and the collective talents we have in the club. Not only will the program help to strengthen the team dynamics, it will also help the individuals to make adjustments if they find that their thinking preferences and certain behavioural attributes do not support the pursuance of their goals.”
– Koh Mui Cheng, Immediate Past President
“The Emergenetics workshop is one of the very few profiling workshops I have attended. I found the content of the workshop to be enlightening and it makes a lot of sense. I have gained a better understanding of myself, especially my thought-process and how I conduct myself. This is really useful in my day-to-day work where I interact with the various internal and external stakeholders. Understanding my team members allow me to leverage on their strengths to gain strong team dynamics.”
– Liew Chee Yin, Immediate Past President
“The course helped me to understand more about the members’ thinking and behavioural preferences. With the addition of new members, the course facilitates the understanding of the profile of these members and in turn improves communication with them.”
– Lam Siok Loon, Secretary
